Oh yes, The Beat Suite now have their own awards for something as well!

On tonight's episode of The Beat Suite we're having a very special feature. Since it's the first show of 2010 with both Skeleton & Dolhasz we've decided to sum up the last year of Glitch-Hop we've played.

We discussed the nominations together and after much debate we've come up with this tasty selection of the finest glitch-hop of 2009 [in our opinion, nothing more.] The rules of nomination were simple:

Straight out of Golden Hill California, 6Blocc a.k.a. R.A.W. has been rolling out basslines that travel blocks and blocks for decades. Starting out in 1985 and releasing records accross the board through the Late 80's Hip Hop scene, early 90's Jungle.. In 2007 R.A.W. Re-invented himself as 6Blocc and is currently smashing up dance floors with his Dubstep sound.. having released tracks on numerous labels such as: Babylon UK, NOS records, Phunked Up Recordings, Warner Bros. Records, Tribe Steppaz, Bootshake, Sound Sphere Recordings etc etc the list just goes on..

We played tunes from these to fresh slabs of Wax: Illegal Dubs Vol 3 and Obsidian on Terminal Dusk records..

As you've all probably noticed, this week we've come back with loads of various content for the show. Apart from the weekly showcases, this week The Beat Suite is looking at Dubstep that's just a bit different.

The Upbeats - Big Skeleton
Label: Non Vogue
The album name inspired by a grim story straight out of a Brazilian favela well represents the content. A concept-album take on Dubstep, which sounds very promising.

Eskmo - Let Them Sing
Label: Planet Mu
An incredibly produced, spacious, wet and 'chewy' tune by the San Francisco based Brendan Angelides, aka "Eskmo" & "Welder".
Having played alongside legends such as Tipper, Si Begg, Glitch Mob and Flying Lotus, his style is an impressive mixture of space, power and pristine production.

Beautiful Small Machines w/ Simon Lebon (of Duran Duran) - Simple Joys- Mindelixir Remix
The Higher EP
Label: Abstract Logic Recordings

This tune shows just how much potential and inspiration Dubstep still has to offer. Very accessible, with a chance to really make it big in the wider scene. This tune got to #18 on Hype Machine as Mindelixir reported on his Facebook.

Mycho Pan Cocoa - Flute Shot (Low Frequency High Life EP) Label: MalLabel Music
Organic, fat and laid back, this track shows a fusion of what The Beat Suite like most in dubstep. Slightly resembling the atmosphere of Mongolia Expedi Sound (I.O.T. Records) this tune is just a taste of an incredibly varied release.

Subject Lost - 220V
495 Minus EP Label: Owntempo
Crafted into a vast atmospheric ambience, this tune is an example of how progressive dubstep is getting, putting much more attention to the background and build up of atmosphere. Great concept, great EP.

Also big up Roskoe [Dubstation] for battling Beat suite resident Skeleton, Roskoe was repping dubstep & Skeleton was dropping breaks.. Breaks/ Skeleton clinched it this time round in a tight and merciless [friendly] battle..

Just like last week - The Beat Suite has been invited by Marc Reck to host the Mr Elephant Radio Show on RhubarbRadio.com . Once again - it was a wicked experience, especially due to the lovely quiet atmosphere at The Custard Factory. As you've probably heard by now, The Beat Suite has to battle with a massive rave every Wednesday now, and having a quiet studio makes a real difference.

The Beat Suite held it down at The Bull's Head, Moseley this gone Friday, alongside Mr Elephant's finest Marc Reck and VJ Blendstate and DJ Lopan from Sumo Soundsystem.
The vibe of the night was amazing, all thanks to the crowd, which was well up for a rave!

We'd like to thank all the supporters and everyone involved in any way and at the same time - we'd like to extend an invitation to Cinephonic #3. That's happening at The Hare & Hounds next Saturday. We will be playing alongside the legend that is Automaton (who's been on our show before) so if you're coming down, expect some head-nodders comin your way.

A big thank-you going out to First Fold Records for their amazing live performance on The Beat Suite yesterday. Incorporating lots and lots of various bits of unusual gear such as old radios, tape players, a Stylophone all glued together with original beats, the fully improvised performance was amazing to listen to.

Massive props also going out to Royal, who not only created the current graphical identity of the label but also played his selection of the First Fold back catalog and laid down some really interesting scratching.

And last but not least - respect to all the audience we had in the studio during the show - Adele, Slobs and Seeds from Secret Wars as well as Boogie Dave and Roscoe from Dubstation

We have prepared a very special program for you this week! Since we will not be in the studio on Wednesday night we have pre-recorded a couple of 'field programmes' - one is Dolhasz's Polish Barbacue Sessions straight from a garden in sunny Poland.
The other is Skeleton's special selection from The Lake District. Additionally, right at the end of the 2 hours, Open Beats's Royal has prepared a short mix for all you tune-thirsty Rhubarbians.

Yesterday's show was another heavyweight classic, big shouts to the guest selector Roscoe from Dubstation, holding it down in the absence of Dolhasz.

Next week's show is going to be a bit unusual - both Dolhasz and Skeleton will be away from Birmingham. Because we would never leave our listeners with a blank, the show will be coming to you from two places - Poland and the Lake District. An hour each - Skeleton and Dolhasz will provide the best of tunes from their local areas. It's gonna be a very different show, as we won't have the studio equipment to use, however the tunes will most definitely compensate for this.

Straight from Moseley, Birmingham, The Beat Suite is proud to bring you some fresh information! This Wednesday night / Thursday morning (8th/9th July) we will be having two very special guests in the studio.
One is the current DMC World Champion, whom you might have seen playing at nights such as The Big Dirty, Scratch Club or Secret Wars - the one and only DJ Switch, turntablist extraordinaire.
Alongside him, you'll be able to hear Automaton, also repping Scratch Club Birmingham.

Hello Beat Suiters!

Yesterday's show was a wicked one! Those of you who were tuned in, or have already listened back, know that The Beat Suite HQ has been temporarily relocated from Umberslade Road, Selly Oak to Unit 1418 ;]. Still we managed to pull off a well enjoyable show despite having to dig through piles of our shizzle in search for headphones etc.

As soon as we're settled down, we will provide you with a tracklist, and the 'Listen Again' link to the show is now available just to the right hand side of this blog.

Smah Bro'z Smash Vegas!

Word people, get down to the Hippodrome on sat27th June to support Brum breaking crew Smash Bro'z, they've gained a place to compete in the finals of the World Hip Hop Dance Championships in Las Vegas this July! Massive propz for that.. But as we know flying to vegas isn't all that cheap so they need help in getting there.. check this flyer for details of their latest fundraiser..

This crew have serious talent and they will be the first Brum crew to represent at such an event.. You may have seen them before at the Yard Bird or at Creature in the Rainbow Warehouse..

Hello everyone!

Today was a very busy day for us, but we have achieved much!

First off, we made a little promo video in our overgrown back garden with our good friend Fredrick, who came to chill with us during the shoot. This is just a little mock up we did, but we'll whack a better quality one filmed in the studio soon.

We've also added some links to pages you should definitely check out. You can find these on the right, just below the Listen Again section. This section is obviously going to expand largely as we go on, so this is just a little taster for you.

Also, notice the little post box beneath that. Feel free to use it as much as you like. Do make sure you submit your name, as unless you're a registered Blogspot user, it will come up as 'annonymus' and how will we shout you out then?

As we and many other Rhubarb Radio presenters have mentioned before, The Rainbow in Digbeth is facing some serious issues.

To put a long story short - one person has been complaining about supposed noise disturbance and the Environmental Protection Unit has put in a Noise Abatement Order on the Raibow, despite its long struggle to reach a sane compromise.

On Friday, Kent Davis, landlord of the Rainbow gave a speech at the Rainbow commenting this situation. The whole story, including fragments of the speech and interviews will be featured on The Beat Suite this Wednesday night, 00.00-02.00.
It is not only us that have been supporting the case, a number of Rhubarb Radio presenters have got involved (however there is no official station-wide opinion on the matter as of yet) as well as about 20.000 other people (see the Facebook group).
